Monroe Lace for City College Board of Trustees

I am first, foremost, and forever a teacher. I found opportunity through trade school, a calling in the classroom, and students and families I have been proud to serve ever since.

Today, I am a public school teacher running for Community College Board. Every decision I make will begin with one question: What best serves students? I want my students to know that when they are ready to take their next step, whether toward a degree, a trade, or simply a love for learning, City College will be stable and able to serve them.

Background

I am a Cantonese American and the child of public servants, my dad a janitor and my mom a sheriff's technician. Seven years ago, I ran away to San Francisco with a dream of building a better life. I rented a room in an SRO hotel in the South of Market, where I still live today. I went to trade school and earned my cosmetology license, providing me with a direct path to employment, entrepreneurship, and economic mobility.

Experience

In 2023, I won the title of Miss San Francisco. During my year of service, I partnered with the San Francisco Unified School District and the San Francisco Education Fund to meet students across thirteen K–12 schools. I decided right then to dedicate my life to children. I became a public school teacher. Mayor Daniel Lurie then appointed me to San Francisco's Human Rights Commission. Today, I am running for one stakeholder: students.

Why City College?

I am first, foremost, and forever a teacher. I am the only teacher on the ballot. I understand what students need to succeed. I work directly with the students City College serves and the programs City College provides. I want my students to know that when they are ready to take their next step, whether toward a degree, a trade, or simply a love for learning, City College will be stable and able to serve them.
